Arts & Culture

Since the early 1800's, painters such as Thomas Cole, Asher Durand, Fredric Church and other members of the Hudson River School were, in a large part, responsible for enticing privileged city dwellers to the Catskills with their romantic depiction of a rugged American wilderness. Today, the beauty is captured by contemporary artists like Francis X. Driscoll whose local landscape photography featured on this site inspires both locals and visitors to venture the unbeaten path that leads to a spectacular waterfall, secluded glen, or panoramic vista. Visits can be made to the historic homes of Thomas Cole and Fredric Church

The Catskill Mountain Foundation offers year round performances of classical music, dance, and theater, including Hollywood and Foreign/Indie films presented in a   beautifully restored two screen movie theater in Hunter. 263-4908
